Fuji Oil's proposal for “demonstration of oil and fat production using oleaginous yeast” is selected as a NEDO “Bio Manufacturing Revolution Promotion Project Research and Development Plan”
2025.8.6
A project proposed by Fuji Oil Co., Ltd. (Head Office: Izumisano-city, Osaka; President and Chief Executive Officer: Tatsuji Omori) has been selected by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) as part of its public proposal process. Fuji’s proposal for the “Development and Demonstration of Bio Manufacturing Technology that Contributes to the Transformation of the Oil and Fat Industry Structure Utilizing Unused Raw Materials” (hereafter referred to as “the Project”) is part of the “Bio Manufacturing Revolution Promotion Project”.
This NEDO project is part of the “Research and Development Plan for the Biotech Manufacturing Revolution Promotion Project” initiated by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI). The project aims to develop the technologies necessary for bio-manufacturing of a variety of products using diverse raw materials and to establish the social systems required for the relevant value chain. This project will promote a shift in manufacturing processes to bio-manufacturing and the social acceptance of bio-manufactured products.
Fuji Oil will utilize its knowledge gained over many years of research and development on oleaginous yeast to develop high-value oil and fat producing yeast strains suitable for food and non-food applications and will establish an oil and fat production system that reduces environmental impact by utilizing unused biomass as a raw material. Fuji’s plan includes the conversion of biomass derived from sugar beets and sugarcane obtained in Japan into a feedstock, and the standardization of the product and process specifications necessary for the development of the yeast oil market. The project will include implementation of initiatives for an integrated approach to the implementation of yeast oil within society at the completion of the project at the end of FY2031. Through this project, Fuji Oil will contribute to the establishment of a sustainable, circulatory oil and fat industry with bio-manufacturing technology at its core.
Since its foundation, The Fuji Oil Group has worked to solve social issues through plant-based ingredients. Through its business, Fuji Oil Group is committed to solving food sustainability issues and contributing to the achievement of the SDGs (United Nations Sustainable Development Goals).
